Living in Bloomfield

Bloomfield is a larger medium-sized township located in the state of New Jersey. With a population of 53,702 people and 12 associated neighborhoods, Bloomfield is the 28th largest community in New Jersey.

Housing costs in Bloomfield are among some of the highest in the nation, although real estate prices here don't compare to real estate prices in the most expensive communities in New Jersey.

Also of interest is that Bloomfield has more people living here who work in computers and math than 95% of the places in the US.

Of important note, Bloomfield is also a township of artists. Bloomfield has more artists, designers and people working in media than 90% of the communities in America. This concentration of artists helps shape Bloomfield’s character.

A relatively large number of people in Bloomfield telecommute to their jobs. Overall, about 18.08% of the workforce works from home. While this may seem like a small number, as a fraction of the total workforce it ranks among the highest in the country. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.

One thing that you will notice about Bloomfield is that there is a good-sized population of people who are young, single, educated, and upwardly-mobile career starters. Many singles consider Bloomfield a good place to live without being in a really big city, with opportunities for friendships and fun with others like themselves.

One downside of living in Bloomfield, however, is that residents on average have to contend with a long commute, spending on average 32.72 minutes every day commuting to work. It is, however, a pedestrian-friendly township. Many of its neighborhoods are dense enough and have amenities close enough together that people find it feasible to get around on foot. In addition, local public transit is widely used. For those who would prefer to avoid driving entirely and leave their car at home, it may be an option to use the transit instead.

Although the majority of commuting trips in the township are by private automobile, Bloomfield is somewhat unusual for a township of its size for having a substantial number of people who use public transportation. For a lot of people, the bus helps to get to and from their jobs every morning, which benefits everyone in the Bloomfield area by reducing both traffic and air pollution.

Bloomfield is one of the most well-educated cities in the nation. 48.67% of adults in Bloomfield have at least a bachelor's degree. Compare that to the average community in America, which has just 21.84% with a bachelor's degree or higher.

The per capita income in Bloomfield in 2022 was $50,464, which is middle income relative to New Jersey, and wealthy relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $201,856 for a family of four. However, Bloomfield contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.
